Curriculum - Academic

Abbotsford teaches the English National Curriculum.

Nursery Education

The Nursery is structured around a relaxed and happy environment in an open plan area catering for children from 2 years and 9 months to age 4. Children are introduced to reading, writing and mathematics as well as the opportunity to develop dexterity and creativity through painting, drawing and playtime.

There are excellent outdoor facilities which include the playground, ”Wendy” house, wooden house, water and sand stations and adventure playground.  The school library, trips to local areas of interest, drama and school concerts are just some of the many other aspects which make the early years at Abbotsford so special.

Infant School

The Infant department is housed on the ground floor of the school. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are taught here (children aged 4-6).  The experienced and well-qualified teachers are dedicated to building a solid foundation of academic learning whilst at the same time producing happy and well-rounded children.

Children are taught in a classroom setting but also in small groups for both reading and mathematics, enabling each individual child to gain attention and encouragement as it is needed.

Children read on a daily basis, developing familiarity with language to enable them to write creatively and resourcefully. Problem solving and critical thinking are learnt through mathematics.

Junior School

The Junior department is housed on the first and second floor of the school. Years 3 to 6 are taught here (children aged 7-11) and are immersed in a programme, which prepares them for their secondary school of choice. Children begin to move to different classes for specific subjects, such as science and design technology.  Specialist subject teachers and smaller class sizes ensures high academic standards, whilst catering for the needs of each individual child. Within this structure, the boys and girls feel valued and yet challenged.

The children follow a broad curriculum which offers Mathematics, English, Science, Geography, History, French, Religious Studies, Art, Music, Speech and Drama, ICT, Design Technology, PE and Swimming. Learning is active and enjoyable, with children encouraged to complete tasks both in teams and independently.
