ICT
Our approach to ICT means that every pupil who leaves Abbotsford School will have good IT skills, to enter a world which is demanding an ever-increasing level of computer literacy.
As pupils progress through the school, they can become confident in the use of modern software, including the latest word processing, spreadsheet and database, publishing and drawing packages, presentation software and all the skills necessary to provide coursework in all subjects to the highest standard.
The syllabus comprises the following seven modules:
- Basic concepts of ICT
- Using the computer and managing files
- Word processing
- Spreadsheets
- Databases
- Presentation
- Information and Communication
Languages
At Abbotsford we provide children with the opportunity to learn more than just one language. Currently French is taught as low down the school as the Nursery right through to Year 6. French is taught by a specialist French teacher. In Nursery and the lower years, the children learn through song, mime and other forms of active participation.
The children's learning is consolidated through drawings and illustrations, labelled in the language. In the upper school, the children learn about classroom objects, food and drink and the Geography of France. The children conduct role plays and learn how to order items from a café, building their confidence in conversational French. A trip to France is offered to all pupils in Years 5 and 6 as part of a cultural, linguistic and historical immersion programme.
Spanish is offered as an extra-curricular club every Tuesday lunch-time and enjoys a good attendance. If there is enough demand for a language club the school is happy to set this up and provide its children with an even broader experience of the wealth of languages that are spoken throughout the world. It is commonplace for children of expatriated families to attend Abbotsford for a number of years and their cultures are eagerly welcomed.
